Families First

Oh’ how I adore my family.  I am incredible blessed to have such a beautiful family...inside and out.
The messages below and throughout the history of the church on families is so important.  The family can help keep each of us safe and out of harm’s way.  The family and home is to be a place of refuge.  The family is where the Savior and Spirit reside.  I know that I have everything when I have the love of my family supporting me.  When I forget this, when I let the world cut in, it is then that I can loose the strength of the spirit and I begin to lose who I really am.  I know that having a home that is centered around the gospel will help me continue to have a happy family.  It is my goal to continue to make my home a safe haven from the storms that rage outside and make sure that in our home the Spirit can reside.

Quote 1: Lessons taught in the home by goodly parents are becoming increasingly important in today’s world, where the influence of the adversary is so widespread. As we know, he is attempting to erode and destroy the very foundation of our society—the family. In clever and carefully camouflaged ways, he is attacking commitment to family life throughout the world and undermining the culture and covenants of faithful Latter-day Saints. Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility. While other institutions such as church and school can assist parents to “train up a child in the way he [or she] should go” (Proverbs 22:6), this responsibility ultimately rests on the parents. According to the great plan of happiness, it is goodly parents who are entrusted with the care and development of Heavenly Father’s children."
Elder L. Tom Perry
October 2012 General Conference, Becoming Goodly Parents

Quote 2: "However, I believe that we are not headed in the right direction, individually and as a society, when we connect with family or friends mostly by reposting humorous pictures, forwarding trivial things, or linking our loved ones to sites on the Internet. I suppose there is a place for this kind of activity, but how much time are we willing to spend on it? If we fail to give our best personal self and undivided time to those who are truly important to us, one day we will regret it. Let us resolve to cherish those we love by spending meaningful time with them, doing things together, and cultivating treasured memories."
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
October 2012 General Conference, Of Regrets and Resolutions

Quote 3: As parents, we should remember that our lives may be the book from the family library which the children most treasure. Are our examples worthy of emulation? Do we live in such a way that a son or a daughter may say, ‘I want to follow my dad,’ or ‘I want to be like my mother’? Unlike the book on the library shelf, the covers of which shield its contents, our lives cannot be closed. Parents, we truly are an open book in the library of learning of our homes.
Thomas S. Monson “Dedication Day,” Ensign, Nov. 2000

Quote 4:"Parenthood is a sacred privilege, and depending upon faithfulness, it can be an eternal blessing. The ultimate end of all activity in the Church is that a man and his wife and their children can be happy at home."
As a servant of the Lord, acting in the office to which I have been ordained, I give those in such circumstances a promise that there will be nothing essential to your salvation and exaltation that shall not in due time rest upon you. Arms now empty will be filled, and hearts now hurting from broken dreams and yearning will be healed.
Boyd K. Packer
The Witness,  April 2014 General Conference

Quote 5: "....an eternal bond doesn't just happen as a result of sealing covenants we make in the temple. How we conduct ourselves in this life will determine what we will be in all the eternities to come. To receive the blessings of the sealing that our Heavenly Father has given to us, we have to keep the commandments and conduct ourselves in such a way that our families will want to live with us in the eternities. The family relationships we have here on this earth are important, but they are much more important for their effect on our families for generations in mortality and throughout all eternity."
Robert D. Hales "The Eternal Family", October 1996

Quote 6: "While our individual salvation is based on our individual obedience, it is equally important that we understand that we are each an important and integral part of a family and the highest blessings can be received only within an eternal family. When families are functioning as designed by God, the relationships found therein are the most valued of mortality."
Robert D. Hales "The Eternal Family", October 1996

Quote 7:“We need to make our homes a place of refuge from the storm, which is increasing in intensity all about us. Even if the smallest openings are left unattended, negative influences can penetrate the very walls of our homes.”
Elder L. Tom Perry, The Importance of the Family, April 2003, lds.org

Quote 8: Of one thing you can be certain: every person you see – no matter the race, religion, political beliefs, body type, or appearance – is family. The young woman you look at has the same Heavenly Father as you, and she left His loving presence just as you did, eager to come to this earth and live so that she could one day return to Him.”

Quote 9:  “The doctrine of the family begins with heavenly parents. Our highest aspiration is to be like them. The Apostle Paul taught that God is the father of our spirits (see Heb. 12:9). From the proclamation [see The Family: A Proclamation to the World] we read, “In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life.” The proclamation also reiterates to the world that “marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children”
Robert D. Hales
The Eternal Family, October 1996 General Conference

Quote 10:  “When I think of the love I feel for each member of our family, I sense, to a slight degree, the love that our Heavenly Father bears for His children. While the family is under attack throughout the world, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaims, promotes, and protects the truth that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. ‘The Family: A Proclamation to the World’ and our vast family history efforts are but two evidences of how this Church brings hope and help to the sacred institution of the family.”
